How to make or make a costume mask?

Is it Carnival in a few days, or Halloween, or even a simple fancy dress party, and you have decided to make your own mask? Whether it’s for you, or for your children, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we give you all the steps to create the mask of your dreams. Between paper masks, cardboard masks, papier-mâché masks or even felt masks, the possibilities are endless. So, are you ready to get your hands dirty?

The paper mask

THE paper mask is one of the simplest to make. You will only need a few materials: a sheet of paper, a pair of scissors, paint, colored pencils, and an elastic band. You can also add decorative elements, such as glitter, feathers, or stickers.

  1. Step 1 : Start by drawing the shape of your mask on the sheet of paper. You can use a mask template found on the internet if you wish.
  2. 2nd step : Cut out your mask. Don’t forget to cut out the eye holes.
  3. Step 3 : Decorate your mask. Let your imagination run wild, and don’t hesitate to use all the materials at your disposal.
  4. Step 4 : Attach the elastic to your mask. You can do this by punching holes in the sides of the mask and threading the elastic through them.

The cardboard mask

THE cardboard mask is a little more complex to make than the paper mask, but it is also stronger. To make it, you will need fairly stiff cardboard, a pair of scissors, paint, and an elastic band.

  1. Step 1 : Draw the shape of your mask on the cardboard. Make sure the mask is large enough to cover your face.
  2. 2nd step : Cut out the mask. Be careful during this step, as the cardboard can be difficult to cut.
  3. Step 3 : Paint your mask. Let it dry before moving on to the next step.
  4. Step 4 : Attach the elastic to your mask.

The papier-mâché mask

THE paper mache mask is a DIY classic. It takes longer to make than the previous two, but the result is worth it. Here are the steps:

  1. Step 1 : Prepare your papier-mâché. To do this, cut strips of newspaper and prepare a glue made from flour and water.
  2. 2nd step : Form the mask. You can use a balloon as a base. Cover it with strips of newspaper soaked in glue, leaving space for the eyes. Leave to dry for several hours.
  3. Step 3 : Decorate your mask. You can paint it, but also add relief elements, like feathers or glitter.

The felt mask

Finally, the felt mask is ideal for children. It is soft, comfortable, and easy to make.

  1. Step 1 : Draw the shape of your mask on a sheet of paper.
  2. 2nd step : Cut the shape out of the felt.
  3. Step 3 : Add the details. For example, you can cut out shapes from different colored felt and sew them onto the mask.
  4. Step 4 : Sew elastic to the sides of the mask.

Now that you know how to make your own costume mask, all you have to do is get started. Whatever material you choose, remember that the most important thing is to have fun while doing it, and of course, to have even more fun once the mask is on your face! So, grab your scissors, your pencils, your brushes, and let the carnival begin!
